Prince Albert and Northern Saskatchewan are seeing an increase in the number of jobs for the first time in seven months.

According to Statistics Canada’s monthly report, the region added around 800 positions in May.

Despite the monthly increase, the region has lost around 3,200 jobs since the start of the year. This is the second most among regions across Western Canada.

The only place having a worse start to the year is North Coast and Nechako, B.C., as they’ve lost around 3,700 positions.

Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Alberta, and British Columbia are split into 25 regions.

All other Saskatchewan regions have either seen a jump in positions or the same amount from the start of the year.

There are jobs available, according to SaskJobs. The website notes there are over 700 job listings in P.A., 530 in North Battleford, and around 250 in Melfort to name a few communities.

Looking at the monthly numbers, the wholesale and retail trade had the best month in the Prince Albert and northern Saskatchewan region as it added around 700 spots. The educational services sector also had a strong month with a jump of around 400 positions.

The accommodation and food services sector had the worst month, losing around 400 jobs.

Meanwhile, the unemployment rate for the region is currently sitting at 6.4 per cent.

The region’s rate is higher than the province’s, 4.8 per cent, and Canada’s, 5.1 per cent.
