Former River Rider taking his talents to Calgary

Jun 4, 2022 | 9:00 AM

The Calgary Colts of the CJFL made its first signing of the new season on Wednesday, and it just happened to be a player from Prince Albert.

Former River Rider and soon-to-be graduate of St. Mary High School, Cole Anseth, committed to joining the team for the coming season.

“I’m super excited. Since my first year of Reiver Riders, I’ve always wanted to play at the next level,” he said.

Anseth could barely hold his excitement when thinking about the next journey of his football career, adding Calgary has a lot to offer him.

“It has a ton of good teams, there’s a lot of work opportunities, there’s schooling opportunities there. I thought it would be a good fit.”

The Calgary Colts signed a number of high school players on June 1, which was the CJFL National Signing Day.

Anseth graduates at the end of June and hopes to be in Calgary by Canada Day in time for training camp in mid-July.

He played with the P.A. River Riders for five years, starting at the age of nine, playing both spring and fall leagues. He said that experience coupled with playing for the Marauders helped shape him as a player and person.

“I picked up on a lot of good football knowledge. When I went and worked out with St. Mary and played for them, Mr. Hundabee went through everything and helped me tremendously to take my game to the next level.”

Elsewhere in Prince Albert football news, several other players are moving on to the next stage of their journeys.

Raelynn Sande made the Under 18 female Team Saskatchewan for the first annual national championship. Scott Adamko made the U18 provincial team that will play in the U18 Canadian Championship, along with Crusader Tazmin Smith-Windsor. Gage Prodaehl made the U16 Team Sask roster which will be playing in the Western Canadian Championship, and Ashley Viklund will represent Canada at the IFAF Women’s World Championships in July.
