May 6, 2022 | 11:16 AM

Prince Albert and northern Saskatchewan are continuing to see a drop in the number of jobs.

According to Statistics Canada’s monthly report, the region lost around 800 positions in April.

This is the sixth straight month P.A. and Northern Saskatchewan has seen a decrease.

Since the start of the year, the region has lost roughly 4,000 jobs. This is the fourth most among regions across Western Canada.

The only places having a worse start to the year are Edmonton, Vancouver Island and Coast, and Thompson-Okanagan. Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Alberta, and British Columbia are split into 25 regions.

Agriculture and the health care and social assistance sectors had the toughest month in P.A. and northern Saskatchewan, losing around 500 positions each.

The finance, insurance, real estate, rental, and leasing sector along with the business, building, and other support services also saw drops of roughly 400 jobs.

There are jobs available, according to SaskJobs. The website notes there are over 800 job listings in P.A., 600 in North Battleford, and nearly 300 in Melfort to name a few communities.

Meanwhile, the unemployment rate for the region is currently sitting at 6.6 per cent.

This is the highest it’s been since April 2021. The region’s rate is also higher than the province’s, 5.9 per cent, and Canada’s, 5.2 per cent.
