Province reports 766 new cases of COVID-19

The Government of Saskatchewan is reporting the Omicron variant BA.2 is the dominant strain of COVID-19 making up 83 per cent of the variants of concern in this weeks epidemiology (epi) report.

A little over half of residents 18 year and older have at least one booster vaccination. The additional doses are strongly encouraged to prevent the spread.

This weeks report presents data from April 24 to April 30 and hospitalization data from April 27 to May 4.

There were 766 new cases reported, which is about 0.6 laboratory-confirmed cases per 1,000 population. There were also 14 new deaths, the same as reported in the previous report.

The Government of Sask. performed 7,337 laboratory tests, reflecting 6.1 tests per 1,000 population. The number of tests this week were more than last week. One in 10 tests were positive and the majority of positive lab tests were 50 years and older.

From Feb. 13 to April 16 they are reporting the risk of hospitalization, ICU admission or death was nine to seven times higher among the unvaccinated.

In long term care homes there were 17 confirmed outbreaks in the province.

As of April 30, of the population five years and older, 85.8 per cent received at least one dose of a two dose COVID-19 vaccine and 80.8 per cent completed a series. And among the population 18 years and older, 52 per cent had received at least one booster vaccination.
