Northern Sask. golf courses planning to open in coming weeks

May 2, 2022 | 5:00 PM

Golf season is just around the corner for multiple communities across northern Saskatchewan.

Several courses have opened up their driving range while they wait for the warm weather to clear out the rest of the snow.

One course not waiting is Kachur’s Golf Club just outside of Prince Albert as they’re planning to open on Wednesday.

Owner Patty Kachur said they’ve been fortunate this spring when it comes to all the snow melting.

“We were thinking we would maybe flood. It’s all gone, it’s all in the ground, no puddles, no nothing.”

The course is dry enough for them to open the course without having to create temporary greens, tee boxes, and paths to accommodate for wet conditions.

Other courses aren’t as fortunate.

The Nipawin Golf Club still doesn’t have an exact opening date.

“There’s still some snow out there in some spots, so it’s probably going to be a little while yet,” said Steve Percy, superintendent of the golf club.

Those new to the area who are upset courses aren’t opening by early May should get used to it.

Kevin Ryhorchuk, the general manager of the Melfort Golf and Country Club, noted sometime in mid-May is typically the opening date.

“I’ve been out here going on 30 years, and back in the day May 15 to October 15 basically was your timeline and if you got out before May 15, it was a bonus.”

Meanwhile, northern Saskatchewan is expected to be hit with a warm spell in the coming days which could help courses open sooner rather than later.
