Raiders win two divisional awards; draft lottery news and more

Apr 21, 2022 | 4:00 PM

The Prince Albert Raiders won their division’s WHL Business Award and are up for league-wide accolades. The WHL Business Award is presented each year to the team that gives back to the community and offers the best in-game experience for fans.

The Raiders changed to an online ticketing system, allowing fans to purchase and renew season tickets online, as well as storing and managing their ticket information online. Paciolan, the online ticketing platform, has been widely used by fans as 90 per cent of season tickets have been renewed.

The Raiders have also done a lot in the community, raising $30,000 through their 50/50 to Matt Swaby’s family, $4,000 to the Adam Herold Legacy Foundation, and $1,000 to Prince Albert Pride, among other initiatives.

The Raiders will be up against the B.C Division’s Kamloops Blazers, the Central Division’s Lethbridge Hurricanes, and the U.S. Division’s Everett Silvertips. The award winners will be announced on June 1.

Quick Lodewyk/top of the Klass

Raiders forward Harrison Lodewyk could be a tough beat in the WHL Scholastic Player of the Year award. Lodewyk has a 98 per cent average in his three core classes at Carlton Comprehensive High School just beside the Art Hauser Centre. Lodewyk won the team’s Scholastic Player of the Year award and has now secured the award for the WHL East Division. Lodewyk is now up for the Doc Seaman Memorial Trophy for the league-wide accolades.

Another Prince Albert tie is in the Scholastic Player of the Year award as well. Prince Albert’s Gabe Klassen graduated early from Carlton Comprehensive High School and the 18-year-old is already on the brink of completing seven college credits while playing for the Portland Winterhawks. Klassen is the U.S. Division nominee for the award.

Raiders to pick 10th in both WHL Prospects and U.S. Prospects Drafts

The Prince Albert Raiders will have the 10th overall selection in both the WHL Prospects and U.S. Prospects Drafts coming up in May.

This past draft, the Raiders selected Cole Peardon and Ryder Ritchie with back-to-back picks, 13th and 14th overall.

The Medicine Hat Tigers won the draft lottery and will kick off the draft on May 19.

The Prince Albert Raiders will have the 10th and 35th selections in the 2022 WHL U.S. Priority Draft, slated for May 18. The Edmonton Oil Kings won the draft lottery and will pick first and 44th overall.

Last year, the Raiders selected Dmitri Toporowski and A.J. Ulrich with the 21st and 24th overall selections. The Raiders took Jamison Sluys with the fifth choice in the inaugural 2020 WHL U.S. Priority Draft and chose Declan Stewart 40th overall.
