P.A. golf professional ‘disappointed’ with added PST on green fees

Golfers across the province will soon have to pay a bit more to play a round and that’s not sitting well with a Prince Albert professional.

The province revealed its budget last week which included a six per cent provincial sales tax (PST) on green fees, gym memberships, tickets to fairs, concerts, museums, entertainment events, and sporting events.

This is planned to help cover added expenses the province is facing, including the funds they’re using to help address the surgical waitlist that built up during the COVID pandemic.

Darcy Meyers, head professional at Cooke Municipal Golf Course, told paNOW this increase will add up over time.

“It will be a couple of dollars a round that’ll go straight to the government…people are definitely going to see an impact.”

The PST expansion is set to come into effect on Oct. 1, 2022. Meyers added because of this it’s too hard to tell right now if golfers will stop going out.

“You want people enjoying recreational activities and the facilities that host them and this might be a deterrent for some people.”

Meanwhile, the Prince Albert Raiders are still trying to figure out if ticket prices will be going up during the 2022-23 season.

Minor league sports teams and non-profits are being exempt from the PST expansion, two categories the team falls under.
