What to expect from this year’s Oscars

Mar 27, 2022 | 10:10 AM

The red carpet is once again being rolled out for the Oscars.

The favourites to win the coveted best picture award at Sunday’s show are Apple TV+’s “CODA” and Netflix’s “The Power of the Dog.”

If either film wins, it would be the first time the award goes to a streaming service production.

David Ong, director of marketing services for Aspen Films, told paNOW he believes this could be a sign of things to come for the movie industry.

“I think it’s going to be very interesting to see how the academy moves forward in acknowledging the type of quality that’s coming from streaming services and that they are the big spenders on the hunt for good quality content.”

He added the overall competition for best picture is very strong this year.

If given the opportunity to cast a vote, Ong said he’d choose the movie with the best story. To him, that best describes “CODA” a film about a woman who’s the only one in her family who can hear.

“It did a really great job of showing that story, the family dynamics, even the love that they have for each other. It made me feel really good versus some of the other nominations out there.”

Meanwhile, the Oscars will once again have a host—three, actually. The three women who will share the hosting duties are Amy Schumer, Wanda Sykes, and Regina Hall.

The hope is to see a spike in viewers after last year’s show was the least-watched in the broadcast’s history.

Ong thinks people would turn back in if they turned away from making it a spectacle and instead focused on the movies.

“For myself, movies that I didn’t get a chance to watch, and they did qualify for a certain type of award… maybe I should move that up on my watching list.”
