The ‘battle of the fish’ closed out the opening day of the Senators Cup Indigenous hockey tournament in Prince Albert, which marked its triumphant return to the Art Hauser Centre after two years of cancellations.

The Good Fish Flames defeated the White Fish Flyers 5-3 to close out the opening day. The Flames will remain in the tournament in the losing bracket. The Flyers lost both their opening day games despite getting two goals from Jon ‘Nasty’ Mirasty, who was perhaps the toughest human playing hockey during his professional career.

In other action, the Peguis Redmen won a pair of games, beating the La Ronge 89ers and Moose Lake to advance to the quarter-finals on the A side. They’ll take on the Black Lake Ice, who defeated the Red Earth 29ers in their first game. The Beardy’s Blackhawks beat James Smith, and will take on the Sandy Lake Chiefs in the other quarterfinal matchup. The Chiefs defeated the Round Lake Bears.

To make up the other quarterfinal bracket, the PBCN Stars will take on the Crosslake Islanders, and the Norway House Bruins will play against the perennial favourite Red Pheasant Rebels.
