Prince Albert Police Service part of gun amnesty program

People who have guns they don’t want will soon have a chance to turn them in to police safely.

The Prince Albert Police Service (PAPS), along with the RCMP and several other organizations will take possession of firearms that are not wanted.

The goal of the program is safe disposal and to make sure guns do not fall into the hands of criminals who break into homes and steal them, said the PAPS in a written statement.

The amnesty period starts today and goes until April 10.

Often unwanted guns have come into the possession of owners who have inherited them but do not want to keep them.

People who want to turn in a gun can do so in Prince Albert by calling the police at 306-953-4222. You should not go unannounced to the police station with a gun.

Once contacted, the police will arrange to come and pick up the firearm.

The amnesty is not limited to regular firearms. People can also turn in replica guns or ammunition or parts of firearms.

In rural areas, residents should contact their nearest RCMP detachment.

Police also say that during the amnesty period people turning in the weapons will not be subject to any charges if they turn in an unauthorized weapon.

This does not extend to people who are detained or arrested for other reasons and found to be in possession of a gun nor does it apply if it is determined that the gun was used for a criminal purpose or obtained through a criminal act.

In addition to the RCMP and the Ministry of the Environment, the following municipal police services will be participating; Saskatoon, Regina, Moose Jaw, Estevan, Weyburn, File Hills First Nations, and Wilton.
