P.A. Legion looking to honour Afghanistan, Korean, Peacekeeping veterans through monuments

The Prince Albert branch of the Royal Canadian Legion is hoping to honour more veterans through different monuments.

They’re aiming to recognize those who fought in the Afghanistan War, Korean War, and those who served as Peacekeepers at Memorial Square which is already home to the community’s cenotaph, plaques, and flag poles for the Legion and Army, Navy & Air Force Veterans (ANAVETS).

Project lead Brenda Cripps told paNOW too many don’t see these people as true veterans and her hope is this will change that.

“So many people out there think the veterans ended after World War II.”

Discussions are underway with the city about where on Memorial Square the monuments should be put up. The first option is closer to city hall with the second option focusing more on the cenotaph.

When a decision is made, the legion will start a fundraising effort to help cover the costs. Right now, they’ve contributed $18,000 for the project with another $13,262 coming from Veterans Affairs Canada under the Commemorative Partnership Program.

Once completed, Cripps hopes more people recognize the courageous work so many Canadians have done before and during our lifetimes.

“Whether you served in the first, second world war or were a peacekeeper… a veteran is a veteran.”
