CHEER CLASSIC

Local cheer squads win big at Warman Cheer Classic

Mar 14, 2022 | 4:32 PM

For dozens of young dancers and cheerleaders, it was an experience they never thought they’d be a part of.

The Warman Cheer Classic, billed as Saskatchewan’s largest cheer and dance competition took place this past weekend for the first time since before the COVID pandemic began.

But for many cheerleaders in Prince Albert, it was their first time taking part in an event like this.

“It was a big adjustment for all of us because again, it was our first time going to anything like this,” said Bethany Leachman with Prince Albert Dance Company. “It was so exciting there was so much cheering and encouragement from not only the other athletes but from the audience and it was just amazing. Our kids absolutely loved it.”

The Dance Company had three teams in the competition: U6, U12, and U16. The U6 tied for first place in their category while U16 also finished first. The U12 team placed third.

“So, we were blown away by how hard they actually worked in how well they did,” added Leachman.

Another local cheerleading squad, the Prince Albert Cheer Explosion (PACE) also took part in the Cheer Classic.

The PACE Surge team competed in the U12 level 1 division and placed fourth out of six teams.

Now that the Cheer Classic has wrapped up, Leachman and her teams are looking forward to the next events.

“This weekend we’re actually going to provincials and then from there, one team is selected and they get a bid to worlds, which is in Orlando, Fla. Then we’ll just keep working for next year.”

The provincial championships are scheduled for March 19 in Saskatoon.
