COVID Deaths

COVID claims lives of 20 P.A. and north-central region residents in recent weeks

Prince Albert and the rest of the north-central region are leading the province in recent COVID-related deaths.

From February 13 to 26, 20 people died from complications with the virus.

This accounts for roughly 25 per cent of all deaths in Saskatchewan during this time period as there were 81.

Regina was the closest to the north-central region’s total as they had 16 residents pass away. Saskatoon, the province’s biggest city, had 10 deaths.

Meanwhile, the high number of deaths isn’t sitting well with P.A.’s mayor.

Greg Dionne told paNOW this is proof COVID continues to be an issue.

“COVID is still with us, COVID is still driving hospitalizations. People have to realize that COVID is still serious, and we still have to be safe.”

As of March 2, 353 people across the province were being treated in a hospital for the virus. Thirty of these individuals were reportedly in an ICU.

Dionne noted he’s been requesting information from the provincial government for weeks, specifically on surgeries being delayed because of the high patient numbers.

He claimed he was told there are around 36,000 people currently on the waitlist, while many have passed away since they couldn’t get the surgery they needed. This number was mentioned by Health Minister Paul Merriman back in December.

All of this is leading him to believe the province may need to consider bringing back COVID restrictions, especially if more people continue to die.

“I think the deaths outweigh that decision.”
