Raiders’ Herman hopes he can keep firing in goals as his team hunts a playoff spot

On a team with dynamic first-round NHL draft picks, like Ozzy Wiesblatt and 20-year-old captain Reece Vitelli, and newcomers Sloan Stanick and Carson Latimer, the Prince Albert Raiders have some players that can score goals.

But Evan Herman has more goals than any of them.

In fact, he has 19 goals on the season, leading the Raiders so far this year. He also has two hat tricks this year, tying him for third-most in the WHL this season. He also has a pair of two-goal games this year as well.

“It’s nice, but I couldn’t do it without the help of my teammates,” the spotlight avoiding Herman said. “Obviously it’s a team game, they’ve been helping me out and it’s been pretty good.”

Herman’s first WHL career hat trick came against the Winnipeg ICE back on Dec. 14 at the Art Hauser Centre in a 4-1 victory. Herman has four goals against the ICE so far this year, and is looking forward to the challenge of taking on the ICE at home this Saturday.

The ICE are the second-ranked team in the WHL Eastern Conference with a 35-9-2-2 record, but the Raiders have still been able to get a well-fought 2-2 record against them so far.

“I think it just comes down to our team game and sticking to our structure,” Herman said. “I just hope to have success as a group against them and get a few more points before playoffs.”

But before then, the Raiders will take on the Moose Jaw Warriors at Mosaic Place in the Friendly City. The Warriors have defeated the Raiders four times in five meetings this year, and have won all four games they’ve played since the Raiders beat the Warriors 3-2 back on Oct. 13.

“I just want to see us compete. I know we’re a hardworking group, and these are huge points for us now as we make a push for the playoffs. These games are huge and we’re looking forward to it,” Herman said.

Rob Mahon will have calls on both games, with pre-game coverage starting at 6:30 p.m. on CKBI.
