P.A. resident trying to have family in Ukraine flee to Canada

The Canadian government announced on Thursday they’re developing a plan to help Ukrainians with families in the country move here and become permanent citizens. They’re also creating a Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel which will give Ukrainians temporary asylum in the country.

Shaposhnyk didn’t say whether his family wants to move here permanently, just that they’re trying to get out of the war-torn country.

His dad, however, will most likely have to stay behind as he’s 57, and all men between the ages of 18 and 60 have been ordered to stay behind and help fight off the Russian advance.

Shaposhnyk believes there is a chance his dad could be able to join the rest of his family.

“They’re saying if somebody has lots of kids, they might let him go out. But he’s not going to just leave… if it gets pretty badly, then maybe.”

He added his dad understands his number one priority is his family and if that means joining them then he’ll try and do it.

In the meantime, Shaposhnyk said his dad is volunteering his time to help the Ukrainian cause.

“He’s a Christian guy and he said he’s not going to kill people, but he’s supporting… like with food and transporting stuff.”

Meanwhile, a rally is being held in P.A. on Thursday March 3 in support of Ukraine.

It’s taking place at city hall and gets underway at 6 p.m.
