RCMP call independent investigation after officer struck by bullet
An external investigation is in the works after an RCMP officer was shot and another man was killed during the execution of a search warrant in Waseca. RCMP announced today they were requesting an independent investigation into the incident.
In October of last year, Battleford RCMP Gang Task Force started an investigation into drug and weapon smuggling in west-central Saskatchewan. On February 26 of this year, the investigation led to three search warrants: two in Lloydminster and one in Waseca.
The search warrant in Waseca led to what RCMP called an exchange of gunfire, during which the officer was hit in the head and a separate shot killed a 33-year-old man from Lloydminster. The officer was treated in hospital for non-life threatening injuries. According to RCMP, the officer is a member of Saskatchewan RCMP’s Police Dog Services, but they could not provide any other details or updates on his condition.
During the execution of the search warrant in Waseca, RCMP arrested three other people. According to their release, the investigation is ongoing and they are not releasing the names of two of the three people arrested. The third person arrested was 20-year-old Odell Angus. He is presumed innocent.
