Raiders’ road warrior Peekeekoot looking to change unusual scoring habits

Mar 2, 2022 | 4:09 PM

Prince Albert Raiders forward Dallyn Peekeekoot has scored eight goals in his 59-game WHL career, with almost all of them coming right in front of the opposition’s net with timely tips and jumping on rebounds.

But oddly enough, Peekeekoot has yet to score a WHL goal in the Art Hauser Centre.

All four of his goals this season have come on the road, with one in Medicine Hat Oct. 22, two in Swift Current Nov. 13, and one in the Raiders’ latest game in Edmonton on Feb. 27. And of course, all four of his goals last year came in the Subway Hub Centre at the Brandt Centre in Regina.

“I’m not too sure, I’ve got to get something going here,” Peekeekoot laughed before a Wednesday practice in the Art Hauser Centre halls. “Hopefully, it will come sooner or later.”

His unusual lack of scoring touch at home hasn’t stopped two things, 1) the support from his home Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation, and the fact he’s become a fan favourite for his rugged, no-nonsense style of play.

“It’s been awesome seeing family in the crowd, really awesome,” Peekeekoot said. “And now that COVID restrictions are lifted, more can come and that’s just awesome for them. I know they’ve really wanted to watch.”

Like a lot of the young forwards on the Raiders, Peekeekoot has felt more poised and confident with the pace of the Western Hockey League game. Peekeekoot himself wanted to speed himself up to make more of an impact, something which he feels he’s done throughout the year.

“I think I’ve got a lot faster and just growing with more confidence now,” Peekeekoot said. “The quickness has come, and now it’s just working on the plays and getting more comfortable as the season goes on.”

This weekend, the Raiders will take on the Moose Jaw Warriors at Mosaic Place on Friday, before returning to the Art Hauser Centre for a mini-three game homestand. The Raiders will play the Winnipeg ICE on Saturday, the Lethbridge Hurricanes on Tuesday, and the Saskatoon Blades on Friday.

Check on Rob Mahon’s call of the game on CKBI.
