Rally in support of Ukraine being held in P.A.

Mar 1, 2022 | 2:00 PM

A rally is being held in Prince Albert in support of Ukraine as they continue to fight off Russia’s invasion.

Protests have been popping up across Canada, including in Saskatoon and Regina.

Little examples of support have happened in P.A., however, the lack of involvement in the provincial rallies has left a bad taste in Taras Kachkowski’s mouth.

“We hope to multiply these little examples into one big event,” he told paNOW.

Some of the smaller examples include people flying the Ukrainian flag, prayers at church, messages on social media, and putting on traditional Ukrainian cultural clothing. The latter was done by City Councillor Ted Zurakowski during Monday’s executive committee meeting.

Organizing the local rally along with Kachkowski is Dennis Ogrodnick. Both are part of the city’s population with Ukrainian heritage.

According to the 2016 census, over 4,500 residents, or nearly eight per cent of the population have Ukrainian background. Ninety-five residents also immigrated from the war-torn country.

“We knew there was a sizable Ukrainian community here and obviously a sizable amount of people who are against the war in general regardless of one’s cultural background,” Kachkowski added.

The rally will be held at city hall on Thursday, March 3 starting at 6 p.m.

Everyone is invited and encouraged to show their support through signs.

“It’s not going to be anti-anybody, let’s have peace in the world… that’s my main focus,” Ogrodnick said.
