Raiders ready for Rebels and Oil Kings in return to rink

Feb 4, 2022 | 12:00 PM

After another 12 days of forced time away from the rink, the Prince Albert Raiders will get back into action this weekend with a pair of games at the Art Hauser Centre. They’ll take on the Red Deer Rebels on Friday, before having former Raider captain Kaiden Guhle and the Edmonton Oil Kings come into town on Saturday.

The Raiders lost their first three games against the Rebels before exacting revenge with a high-flying 7-3 victory on Jan. 17 at the Peavey Mart Centrium in Red Deer.

The Raiders got a ton of offensive contributions in that game, Evan Herman had a goal and two assists, Carson Latimer had three helpers, while Landon Kosior and Hayden Pakkala both had a goal and an assist in that game. The big loss in that game was Ozzy Wiesblatt, who was ridden awkwardly into the endboards 14 minutes into the second period by Christoffer Sedoff, and has yet to appear in a game since. Sedoff was assigned a game misconduct for the hit and served a one-game suspension.

The last time the two teams faced off at the Art Hauser Centre was also an absolute barnburner that the Rebels held on to win 8-6. Raider rookie Vladislav Shilo scored his first three WHL career goals in the game for the hat trick.

The Raiders will have to keep an eye out for Ben King, who has five goals against the Raiders in the four matchups, and leads the WHL with 33 goals in 43 games. Arshdeep Bains led the league in points with 59, before being overtaken by Blades forward Kyle Crnkovic. Bains and King are ranked second and third in WHL scoring heading into Friday’s matchup.

At the team’s annual general meeting on Thursday, Raiders general manager Curtis Hunt said 16 of the 22 Raiders have already gone through COVID. Since those who have tested positive won’t have to test again for another three months, the Raiders will be able to finish out the season.

Voice of the Raiders Rob Mahon will have the call on both games on CKBI, starting at 6:30 p.m.
