A man responsible for committing two separate assaults at Saskatchewan Penitentiary while in custody has received an additional eight-year extension to his sentence.

Dwayne Ford, 41, appeared by video Wednesday at Prince Albert Provincial Court from the prison in Quebec where he’s currently being held.

The incidents at Sask. Pen happened in January of 2021 and were just six days apart. In the first incident on Jan. 23, Ford, along with a second inmate, exited their own cells then proceeded to go to the victim’s cell, stabbing him nine times. The entire incident lasted less than 30 seconds.

The victim was transported with non-life threatening injuries but suffered a collapsed lung as a result of the attack.

The second incident took place on Jan. 29, in a common area of the prison. Ford, again with a second inmate, backed the victim into a corner. The victim was stabbed four times (chest, head and back) before correctional officers were able to intervene. The injuries were described as non-life threatening.

For his part in the assaults, Ford received two consecutive four-year sentences.

When given the opportunity to speak, Ford explained that he had been in custody since 2005. and added that while the attacks make him look like a vicious person this was not the case.

“I’m basically trying to survive without being a victim myself,” he said.

Ford added he hoped one day to be released and return to his family.

Judge Loewen said the sentence may look harsh, but also noted Ford’s criminal record which included four prior aggravated assault charges.

At the time of the incidents, Ford was serving a 12-year sentence for aggravated assault, which commenced Jan.12, 2017.

His previous statutory release date was Jan. 12, 2025.
