P.A.’s Lehner steals a shootout win for Swift Current over her hometown Bears

Prince Albert’s Karlee Lehner made 37 saves, including some brilliant pad saves in the shootout for a Sask Female U18 AAA Hockey League victory Friday night, but the Art Hauser Centre crowd was a little quieter than usual after a big win.

That’s because Lehner picked up her eighth win of the season for the Swift Current Wildcats, who defeated her hometown Prince Albert Northern Bears 2-1 in a shootout.

But to get the victory, Lehner had to outduel Bears goaltender Paige Fischer, which turned out to be quite difficult. After Fischer surrendered the opening goal just 31 seconds into the game to Wildcats forward Shelby Rublee, Fischer made 40 straight saves to keep her team in the game. Fischer needed to make some huge saves as well, especially in the third period. She flew across her crease to rob Paris Appel on a clear 2-on-1 one-timer halfway through the third period, before stoning Sadie Keller on a breakaway with three minutes left in the third period.

Bears forward Kassie Ferster would crash the net and equalize for the Bears 55 seconds into the final frame. That’s Ferster’s third goal of the season. She’s also riding the hot hand, as Ferster now has two goals and three assists in her last three games.
