WINTER FESTIVAL

Honorary Chairperson named for 2022 P.A. Winter Festival

Jan 5, 2022 | 10:02 AM

The Prince Albert Winter Festival has named its Honorary Chairperson for the 2022 event.

Franklin Carriere first became involved with the winter festival in 1966 at the dog racing events.

Carriere won the Fort Qu’Appelle dog race that year followed by the Edmonton dog race and eventually the Prince Albert race.

In 1965 he was selected to participate in the Centennial Canoe Race as a member of the Saskatchewan team. Two years later, the team paddled from Rocky Mountain House to Montreal in the world’s longest canoe race. The Saskatchewan team placed sixth overall with a time of 541 hours, 47 minutes and 41 seconds. The race lasted from May until September and included a paddle to New York City and the Statue of Liberty.

In 1970 with a young family to support, Carriere gave up on dog racing and began competing in the King trapper events. He competed from 1970 to 2015 and he won in at least 10 different years in the Prince Albert Winter Festival and won in Meadow Lake, and The Pas, Manitoba.

Carriere retired from his position with the economic development branch of the Saskatchewan government and retired from the King Trapper competitions.

However, he continued to train and encourage young people to become involved in Winter Festivals. Franklin Carriere is currently teaching trapper training in communities across the north for Northlands College and participates in cultural days in Northern Saskatchewan as an Indigenous Elder.

Carriere has always stressed the importance of education and traditional knowledge and he is proud to pass this on to his children, grandchildren and his Chapan.

The 2022 Prince Albert Winter Festival begins on Jan. 15 with the annual Tux & Toques Gala at the Wild Life Hall.

Tickets are still available for the event at Diamond North Credit Union or by emailing pawf.president@gmail.com.
