Manchester United hires a second former member of Toronto FC’s coaching staff

TORONTO — Manchester United has added another former Toronto FC coach to its staff.

Ewan Sharp, an assistant coach with the MLS team this season, has joined the iconic English Premier League side as an assistant coach/analyst. Interim United manager Ralf Rangnick named former Toronto head coach Chris Armas as an assistant coach earlier this month.

Scotland’s Sharp arrives from a short stint with FC Lokomotiv Moscow, where he also served as assistant coach/analyst alongside Rangnick.

Like Armas, Sharp worked for the New York Red Bulls prior to coming to Toronto. 

Sharp spent four seasons as a performance analyst with the Red Bulls, part of Red Bull’s global soccer network. Armas was an assistant coach with the Red Bulls under Jesse Marsch when he and Rangnick, who went on to become head of global soccer for Red Bull, first met five years ago. Armas subsequently coached the Red Bulls.

Armas was fired July 4 after a 1-8-2 start to his first season at TFC’s helm, let go one day after a humiliating 7-1 loss at D.C. United. Assistant coach Javier Perez took over for the rest of the season before Bob Bradley was brought in as head coach and sporting director at season’s end.

Sharp finished out the season with TFC before leaving for Russia last month.

Armas was appointed Toronto’s 10th head coach in January, succeeding Greg Vanney who is now running the Los Angeles Galaxy.

Armas was an elite defensive midfielder during a 12-year playing career with the Los Angeles Galaxy and Chicago Fire, was let go as head coach by the Red Bulls in September 2020 with the team at 3-4-2.

Manchester United currently stands sixth in the Premier League standings at 8-5-3.
