The former captain of the Prince Albert Raiders will also have the letter “C” on his jersey when he represents Canada at the upcoming World Juniors.

Defenseman Kaiden Guhle was announced on Monday as the captain of the national team, while forwards Jake Neighbours and Cole Perfetti will serve as assistants.

“To be selected as captain is something I take a lot of pride in, and I look forward to competing alongside my teammates as we look to achieve our goal of winning a gold medal,” Guhle said.

This is the second year in a row he’s been named to the team, though he wasn’t a part of last year’s leadership group.

“It is an honour any time you have the opportunity to wear the Maple Leaf, and it is even more special to be able to do it on home ice close to where I grew up,” he added.

The Montreal Canadiens’ prospect played for the Raiders for parts of five seasons. In 156 games, he put up 17 goals and 58 assists for 75 points.

In the 2020 draft, he was taken 16th overall by the aforementioned Canadiens.

Earlier this month, Guhle was traded by the Raiders to the Edmonton Oil Kings. In three games with the Oil Kings, he’s been able to score one goal and assist on two others.

Meanwhile, the 2022 World Juniors are set to start this week in Edmonton and Red Deer.

It was originally slated to start on Dec. 19; however, the ongoing COVID-19 situation has forced pre-tournament games to be postponed until at least Dec. 23.

When it does kick off, Guhle and the rest of Team Canada will play their first game against the Czech Republic at Rogers Place in Edmonton.
