Latimer scores both Raider goals but leaves loss to Pats to injury

Dec 10, 2021 | 10:09 PM

Ever since last week’s blockbuster trade, the Prince Albert Raiders have already gotten a lot out of Carson Latimer. He scored both Raider goals in a 5-2 defeat to the Regina Pats, and now has three goals and five points in his three games since coming over in a deal with the Edmonton Oil Kings.

But Latimer exited the game early after suffering a check into the end boards from Pats defenceman Ryker Evans. Evans gave Latimer cross check to the ribs as the Raider forward went to cut behind the goal, and spilled awkwardly into the boards as a result. Evans received a cross-checking minor penalty on the play, while Latimer was helped to the dressing room and did not return for the final 5:15 of the game.

Assistant coach Jeff Truitt said he did not have an update on Latimer’s status immediately after the game, but hopes the speedy forward could recover in time for Saturday’s contest against the Calgary Hitmen.

Special teams were a big difference in the game, as the Pats were 3-7 on their power plays, while the Raiders were 1-7.

That was especially in the first period, as the Pats got both of their first-period goals with the man advantage, getting the teddy-bear-tossing goal from Prince Albert product Tanner Howe on a quick one-timer on the right side. Layton Feist scored on a rebound on the power play, 14 minutes into the opening frame. Logan Nijhoff scored the third Pats’ power play goal in the second period, to make it a 4-1 game.

“We can’t take penalties. We took a lot of penalties here tonight, and you certainly can’t do that. The one-timer that starts it all, that great seam pass, [Howe] got a lot of it and it goes in the back of the net, and we can’t get a block on it, Truitt said. “The second one was an unfortunate rebound, comes to the net, gets kicked out a little bit and they’re Johnny on the spot. The third one, we just got outmuscled in front of the net and out-positioned.”

The Pats were shorthanded before the game began, missing Connor Bedard who is off at Hockey Canada’s World Junior selection camp, as well as Zack Stringer, Zack Smith, and Jake Johnson were all scratched with lower-body injuries.

The Raiders fall to (9-13-1-1) and while the Pats improve to (11-14).
