St. Mary student transforms into snow queen

Zoe Mortimer has been performing on stage for nearly 10 years, but her most recent role is fulfilling one of her own childhood dreams.

The 15-year-old St. Mary student is playing the lead character of “Elsa” in the Broadway North Youth Company’s production of Frozen Jr. When asked by paNOW if she was fan of the story when she was younger, Mortimer laughed and acknowledged she was.

“For my birthday my friends would get me just a bunch of frozen stuff so now in my garage I just have a trunk full of my frozen barbies and all that kind of stuff,” she said.

Mortimer explained the transformation into Elsa has been very fun, adding she was also a fan of the broadway musical that was done. And one of the perks of donning the blonde wig, gloves, and glittery dress, has been taking pictures with lots of young girls.

“So many come to the show in Elsa dresses. It’s the cutest thing ever and after the shows the parents make them come up to me and they tug on my dress and ask can I take a picture with you,” she said.

Wednesday morning’s matinee show for some schools in the area, marked the sixth show since Friday at the E.A. Rawlinson Centre. Mortimer said it’s been fun hearing reaction from family and friends.

“A lot of friends who come and see it, some of them know that I’m in the show but they dont know if I can sing so after they are like ‘oh my god you can sing,'” she said.

Looking back on the past few months of rehearsals and preparation, Mortimer acknowledged it has been challenging but also rewarding. And even when the fame of Frozen begins to melt away, she said she has no plans of letting go her passion for the stage.

“I don’t think I could see myself not doing this kind of stuff. It really what makes me happy,” she said.
