P.A. police & fire services looking at potential increases in funding

Nov 15, 2021 | 2:00 PM

Emergency services in Prince Albert are looking at a potential increase in funding for 2022.

The City of P.A. released its proposed budget for next year earlier in November with police services and the community’s fire department each set to receive a boost in funds.

The police are looking at a budget of $18.3 million when accounting for the operating and capital budgets.

This is around $1 million more than 2021 with around half coming as a result of the multi-year proactive policing strategy the city’s council approved earlier this year.

The biggest increase would be for salaries and benefits as the proposed budget is nearly $1.2 million more than in 2021.

P.A. police services are looking at an increase in revenue, which comes from different areas such as grants, and decreases in other expenses to cover the rise.

The city’s fire department budget is set to increase by around $138,000 to approximately $7.8 million, covering needs in each of its five branches: administration, fire fighting, prevention, maintenance, and fleet and equipment.

The biggest rise would go towards fire fighting, which already secures the majority of the department’s budget.

Salaries and benefits are potentially set to rise by just under $100,000.

The P.A. mobile crisis unit, which provides emergency intervention services, is set to receive its annual $43,600.

Nearly all their funding comes from provincial grants.

Meanwhile, budget talks for P.A. will officially start on Nov. 17, 2021.

Seven meetings have already been scheduled in November and early December.
