U18 AA Red Wings win first-ever Ron Gunville Memorial Tournament, P.A. Vulcans ousted in semifinals

Nov 14, 2021 | 4:26 PM

On Sunday, the Weyburn Red Wings became the first-ever hockey team to U18 AA Ron Gunville Memorial Tournament, held in Prince Albert from Friday to Sunday.

The Red Wings defeated the Humboldt Broncos 6-3 on Sunday to claim the tournament’s championship.

The Red Wings had a 3-1 lead heading into the third period before all hell broke loose. The Broncos galloped themselves back into the game with two goals in 18 seconds to tie the game. Hayden Smart’s goal was followed up quickly with a wicked wrist shot from Ty Sundholm.

But 39 seconds after that, the Red Wings would get their lead restored on an innocent-looking shot from Karter Haupstein, who kept the puck in at the blueline but was happy to celebrate the goal.

The Red Wings would then get an important insurance goal from Donavin Mellon, who won the puck and scored on a shorthanded breakaway with 7:22 remaining in the game. Watt scored his second goal of the game with 2:48 left to put the game out of reach.

Greyson Goudy scored in the first period for the Red Wings, while Ryker Watt got his first goal in the middle frame, and Grier Peterson scored late in the first period. Tommy Ries had the lone Broncos goal in the opening 40 minutes, scoring midway through the second period.

Vulcan Salute

The Prince Albert Lakeland Towing Vulcans played hosts for the weekend tournament. They finished first in their pool after beating the Yorkton Terriers 8-1, the Parkland Elks 6-2, and tying the Indigenous Sports Academy Eagles 3-3. They advanced to the semifinals on Sunday, but fell 5-2 to the eventual champion Red Wings.
