Council Approves

P.A. city council moving forward with ‘No U-Turn’ signs in school zones & economic approach with neighbouring communities

The city of Prince Albert is putting up electric ‘No U-turn’ signs in elementary school zones.

P.A.’s council met on Wednesday where they approved adding the signs to ensure drivers know they can’t conduct a U-turn between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. on weekdays.

Councillor Dennis Ogrodnick, who brought the motion forward, believes this will help make the school zones safer for everyone as motorists will no longer be able to use the excuse, they didn’t know they weren’t allowed to do so.

The plan is to use the city’s electronic message boards instead of putting up new signage.

Along with saving around $7,000, the city’s administration believes adding them to poles that already have multiple signs could be problematic.

They suggest they could detract attention from the crosswalks and maximum 30 km/hr signs.

To ensure drivers follow the ‘No U-turn’ signage, police presence will be increased across the 17 elementary school zones.

Also, the city will be reaching out to each of P.A.’s school districts to set up a competition that looks to have students make social media messages to remind drivers to follow all the rules of the road when driving in a school zone.

Regional Economic Approach

The city of P.A. is also looking to continue its plans in creating a regional approach for economic development.

P.A.’s council also approved yesterday extending the Memorandum of Understanding they have with the Rural Municipalities of Prince Albert and Buckland, the Town of Shellbrook, the Muskoday First Nation, and Peter Ballantyne Developments LP.

The MOU was signed in March 2019 with most of the work done in the past couple of years focusing on setting up the Prince Albert Regional Economic Development Alliance.

None of the other areas have approved the extension, however, the city’s administration is confident they’ll do so in the near future.
