The Metis Nation of Saskatchewan (MN-S) has elected its new President for the Metis youth council.

Saskatoon’s Autumn Larose-Smith won the election this past weekend, narrowly beating Prince Albert’s Cody Demerais by seven votes.

LaRose-Smith had 98 votes while Demerais finished second with 91 votes. Jade Rooney from Yellow Grass, Sask. finished with 20 votes.

“The initial feeling was surprised and followed by a wave of gratitude and excitement and relief as well,” said LaRose-Smith following the election win.

She said she is still waiting to hear from the MN-S on when she will be sworn in as president but she’s excited for what’s ahead.

“I am excited to be a strong voice for Metis on the provincial Metis Youth Council and just really excited to ensure that youth are represented in the Metis Nation every step of the way.”

She added she wants to help populate the regions of the MN-S that currently don’t have a representative on the youth council.

While the result is bittersweet for Demerais, he said he’s grateful for the opportunity to run in this election.

“It was one heck of an experience running for this campaign,” Demerais said in a Facebook post. “As for anyone who has supported my campaign my heart is still very big in gratitude for the hopes and support with everything! Life goes on and I promise you my path of making a difference continues!”
