One of six people charged after a man in Sandy Bay was beaten within an inch of his life, has received a two year jail sentence.

Kobe Ray, 20, was sentenced on Thursday in the northern community, after entering a guilty plea to breaking into a residence before committing aggravated assault.

The court case dates back to Nov. 21, 2019. A 26-year-old man was found by police suffering from severe injuries and was soon after placed on life support due to blood found in his brain. There were also numerous windows broken in the home as well as furniture and appliances severely damaged.

Ray’s jail sentence represented a joint submission from the Crown and defence lawyers.

Upon his release from custody, Ray will be on probation for a period of three years and must abide by a number of conditions including reporting to a probation officer; completing 50 hours of community service within six months; not possessing or consuming alcohol, cannabis or drugs unless prescribed to do so by a doctor; and participation in programming for addictions and anger management.

In total, six people were charged after the incident – two adults and four youth.

Fabian Morin, 21, was sentenced last May and received two-and-a-half year sentence after entering a guilty plea to assault with a weapon. He was given 576 days credit for time spent in custody, leaving just under a year to serve. He’s also prohibited from owning or possessing a firearm for a period of 10 years.

Only one youth has been sentenced to date and received a four month supervision order, after entering a guily plea to break-and-enter. Another youth is scheduled to be sentenced in January.
