Veteran forward Massier joins Raiders

In hockey, you can never go wrong by adding more size and speed and the Prince Albert Raiders feel they brought in an infusion of both. Carter Massier, a 20-year-old forward, has agreed to join the team.

A former Regina Pat and a veteran of 95 WHL games, Massier had his best season statistically last year, when he posted 12 points in 24 games. He began this season in the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) with the Okotoks Oilers, where he posted three points in three games.

“Carter is a 6-foot-1, 200-pound guy,” said Raiders GM Curtis Hunt. “He can just absolutely fly. He will arguably be in our top-three for skating and speed when he gets here. He’s a guy that can play in all situations.”

During the Hub environment, Massier spent some time killing penalties for the Pats, while also providing a net-front presence. In his 95 games he has 13 goals and 27 points, but last year in Regina he seemed to break out.

“The Hub certainly had lots of guys who I thought played really, really well and then it was tougher on others,” said Hunt. “Coming out of the Hub, we’ve seen some players take off and we’ve also seen players struggle. He was a guy who had a good Hub. I’m hoping it parlays into coming here and contributing on both sides of the puck.”

In doing their diligence on the player, Hunt said they spoke with players like Max Paddock, the former Raiders goaltender who played with Massier in Regina. The player’s evaluation was that Massier was the right kind of person to fit in with the Raiders’ culture.

The other side of the coin, however, is that because Massier is a 20-year-old, one of the Raiders other 20-year-olds had to be removed from the roster. The odd man out in this case was forward Michael Horon, who had posted two assists in eight games on the year.

“He (Horon) came in and competed for a spot,” Hunt said. “We had four OAs (over-aged players) and he won that spot. Now, as we kind of change directions and assess this interesting season for us, we had to make a tough decision. We appreciate Michael’s efforts as a Prince Albert Raider. He certainly made an impact on the community while we were in Prince Albert.”

Hunt added that Massier is also not shy to play a physical game, and he expects the 2001-born forward to make an impact in all three zones.
