MELFORT, Sask. — Waste products from pulse processing will have a new life.

Lucent BioSciences and AGT Food and Ingredients have created a novel fertilizer out of the co-products of Canadian-grown pulses resulting in a full seed utilization product.

Field trials using Soileos fertilizer were performed on fruit, vegetable and broad-acre crops across Canada with the inclusion of AGT’s co-product. Tests on broad-acre crops showed an increase in yields of up to 20 per cent and stand count improvement of up to 35 per cent. Tests on vegetables showed yield increases of up to 45 per cent.

With $3 million in seed money from Protein Industries Canada (PIC), the partners have scaled up production from one kilogram of Soileos per day to two tonnes per day.

PIC CEO Bill Greuel said the field trials were a positive step forward in finding new uses for plant-protein co-products that traditionally went to waste.

“Soileos has the potential to positively affect the lives of Canadians along the value chain, from farmers to processors, and I look forward to seeing how that potentially develops,” Greuel said in a news release.

The partners are hoping to build a plant that can produce up to 100 tonnes per day by 2022-23.

The daily price limit (DPL) for canola futures contracts on the ICE Futures platform will rise to $60 per tonne, starting Nov. 1.

That compares to the current limit of $50 per day.

The DPL determines how much a contract can move in each session above or below the previous settlement.

The rules governing the ICE canola futures limits are adjusted twice a year. The next change will be May 1.

The Saskatchewan Pork Industry Symposium will move from a live event to a virtual conference.

Sask Pork Communications and Marketing coordinator Lynn Redl said the rising number of COVID-19 cases was the reason for the change.

The symposium will feature eleven guest speakers from four countries, live sessions featuring industry experts discussing best practices, the latest in industry trends, research and innovation and practical take home information for producers.

The Pork Industry Symposium will be Nov. 16 and 17.
