What’s open and closed on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation?

Sep 29, 2021 | 3:00 PM

Canada’s newest holiday, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, takes place on Sept. 30.

Federally regulated industries such as banks and federal government offices in Prince Albert will close along with some city facilities.

Earlier this month, the City of Prince Albert announced it would recognize the day as a municipal holiday for its employees.

On Sept. 30, transit service will not operate and many city-owned offices will close for the day. This includes City Hall, the EA Rawlinson Centre for the Arts, the Municipal Service Centre, the South Hill Cemetery office, Frank J. Dunn pool, and the office inside the Art Hauser Centre.

The Knotty Pine Bistro in Little Red River Park will also close.

Other municipal facilities will stay open with the following hours in place:

  • Alfred Jenkins Field House: 12 p.m. – 10 p.m.
  • Art Hauser Centre (arena): 7:30 a.m. – 12 a.m.
  • Dave G Steuart Arena: 7:30 a.m. – 12 a.m.
  • Historical Society: 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
  • Kinsmen Arena: 7:30 a.m. – 12 a.m.
  • Landfill: 8 a.m. – 6:15 p.m.
  • Margo Fournier Centre: 8 a.m. – 7:30 p.m.
  • P.A. Arts Centre: 5:30 p.m. – 9 p.m.

The Prince Albert Urban Indigenous Coalition (PAUIC) will be hosting a one-hour education session on Thursday on the topic of residential schools. The pre-recorded session will be about one hour and available on the PAUIC website and social media.

Students from the First Nations University of Canada Northern campus will also be holding an event in front of City Hall at noon to mark the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
