A Shellbrook woman who aspires one day to being recognized as a professional bodybuilder, and with it earning a number of sponsorship opportunities, has added some more hardware to her trophy case.

On Saturday, Kyla Baun, 34, finished first overall among the bikini competitors at the Golden Prairie Cup event in Saskatoon. She told paNOW the award represents turning her dreams into a reality.

“When I started competing my goal was to win the big overall title at a competition. I put everything I had into prepping for this show. I proved to myself that I could overcome any limitations and obstacles set in my way,” she said.

Despite the challenges brought on by COVID, Baun trains year round, and has to follow a fairly strict weight training and diet program. Fortunately, by having a home gym, she has at least been immune to the restrictions public gyms have been forced to follow.

“The dates of the competitions have been pushed back several times however due to COVID. This has made my training more difficult as I have to stop my current progress and maintain it while waiting to continue on closer to the new event date,” she explained.

Later this fall. Baun hopes to attend a National Level Pro Qualifier Event in Toronto, which will allow her to walk the stage at an elite level and compete for the International Federation of Bodybuilding and a Fitness Pro Card.

“I truly love competing. It is an all encompassing sport that tests your dedication, will power and perseverance. I wanted to push myself to be the best that I could be and I feel I accomplished that,” she said.

Prince Albert’s Nicole Sorenson also competed at the event in Saskatoon and finished first in her category. (Bikini Master’s 35+).
