P.A.’s Ring makes the cut at Canadian Senior Golf Championship

Prince Albert’s Martin Ring just made the two-day cut at the 2021 Canadian Men’s Senior Golf Championship in La Malbaie, Que. on Wednesday.

Ring finished his two rounds at 17-over-par, and his name is just one slot removed from the cut line.

By his own lofty standards, Ring had a headache of a start. He was six-over-par after his first four holes of the tournament on Tuesday, including double-bogeys on the first two holes. He finished the first day with an 84, a score he was not overly happy with.

“I need a better start. I started with a couple double-bogeys right off the hop and it’s a type of golf course that if you’re behind the 8-ball, you try to push it a little bit and you start to get into a little more trouble,” Ring said after the first round. “There’s a couple things I have to key in on, I have to be stronger off the tee. But once you get on the greens, you have to pay attention to what’s going on — I have to get my putter going. That’s usually one of my stronger suits but I struggled with it a little bit.”

Ring got a much better start on Wednesday. He started off with a birdie on the first hole and was one-over-par after the first four holes. He finished seven strokes better at 77. By the time Ring’s scores had come in, he was one stroke off the cut but managed to sneak in after the rest of the field had completed their rounds.

Ring and the rest of the field golfed at the Club de Golf Le Manoir Richelieu, which is much different than the Cooke Municipal Golf Course — Ring’s home track.

“It’s a little bit difficult. We’re basically on top of a mountaintop so it’s a little bit different. It kinda fools you. It’s got yardage of about 6,300 yards but I’d say it’s playing more like a 6,600-6,700 yard course just because of all the elevation changes and such,” Ring said. “But it truly is in fantastic condition, the greens are absolutely phenomenal and the fairways are as good as I’ve been playing anywhere. It’s really a very good golf course.”

The third and fourth rounds will continue on Thursday and Friday.
