Two Miles for Mary Radio-athon going virtual once again Oct. 1

Sep 19, 2021 | 9:00 AM

Just like it has for the last 34 years, the Two Miles for Mary Radio-athon will be a go this year, on Oct. 1 from 8-10 a.m. on CKBI radio.

But for the second year in a row, the event will run virtually and over the phone due to the pandemic. Everything will be similar to a ‘normal’ year, but without the breakfast and coffee at the Heritage Centre.

“The radiothon will still take place it will just be in studio with people on the phone rather than in person,” Pattison Media program director Danny Kidd said. “The donations and funds flow is going to work just like every year previous. They’ll have their volunteers set up on a separate phone line taking donations and pledges.”

Two Miles for Mary has been a long-time fundraising staple in Prince Albert for nearly 40 years, raising money to run a transportation service for local seniors.

“It helps our seniors keep on with their regular life,” Two Miles for Mary fundraising coordinator Marilyn Peterson said. “The transportation service allows them to get to their appointments, to get to their doctors, to get to their bank and to go to social events in the community or gatherings with friends.”

Transportation can be difficult for seniors to navigate for numerous reasons, from not having vehicles or licences, and their loved ones being busy.

“So many seniors no longer have a car or even a driver’s license. Many seniors have a limited income, so to be able to get from their home to a business or a social gathering becomes quite a bit issue,” Peterson said. “Families are wonderful, but they’re not also able to provide transportation. Everybody has their own lives and their own commitments, and sometimes it’s difficult for families to provide this assistance to seniors, so they have no way from getting from Point A to Point B. You don’t want to just stare at your four walls.”

The Radio-athon will run on Oct. 1 from 8-10 a.m. on CKBI. Donations can be made by phone at 306-763-6279, in person at the Community Service Centre, or by mail—c/o Seniors Transportation, 101 15th ST WEST, Prince Albert, SK S6V 3P7.
