Prince Albert artist awarded exhibit at Minneapolis airport

An art project by Prince Albert artist Cheryl Ring that brings acknowledgment to the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIW+G) movement will be displayed at an international airport in the coming months.

The ‘Imagine: Thinking outside the box’ exhibit features clay hearts named for missing or murdered women.

A press release explained the clay hearts are ‘bound to a narrative that weaves meaning and understanding that crosses cultures and no individual heart is complete without the other.

“What I know for sure is that missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls is not solely a First Nations issue, not just a women’s issue, but a human one – a Canadian one and we all have to care about it,” Ring said.

She said the project is about women, but the scope goes beyond the female demographic as a general call to action or invitation to view the world with softer eyes and a reminder that all women matter.

“It is a whisper to listen intuitively to the voices of our lost sisters, to help them with their pain, and to commit to moving forward with strength and wisdom. I am proud and honoured to have this project recognized internationally. This is a gift from the citizens of a small-town city in central Saskatchewan. It is a gift of healing and a step in the process of recognition, awareness, and remembrance.”

The exhibit will be displayed in the Minneapolis St. Paul Airport for a year starting Feb. 2022.
