Kim Brown wins her fifth Ladies Lobstick title

Championship Flight match play finals took place on Friday at the Waskesiu Golf Course.

Kim Brown, who lives in Saskatoon but grew up in Prince Albert, had a three-hole lead over Kathy Ziglo after the front nine.

Although Ziglo narrowly missed some putts to win holes, like her hole-out on hole 10 or the tricky five-footer she missed on 13, Ziglo was still able to claw back in the match and cut Brown’s lead to one after 15 holes.

Brown kept that lead intact until the 17th, where her approach shot rolled right next to the pin and eventually forced Ziglo to concede the hole and win Brown the match.

“I knew as soon as I hit it, I hit it how I wanted it to. Just the way it turned out, it hit the mound on the green just perfectly and trickled down there,” Brown said. “I knew I hit a good shot, I was just waiting to see how it turned out.”

Both Brown and Ziglo have been dominant in this tournament in recent years.

Since 2012, Brown and Ziglo have combined for eight of the titles, with Ziglo having won three (2012, 2014, 2020). The only years where a golfer not named Ziglo or Brown won the Ladies Lobstick in that span was when Prince Albert’s Brooke Hobson won in 2013 and Abra Thompson was victorious in 2016.

Even though Brown had a sizeable lead, she knew Ziglo was always a threat to come back into the match.

“It felt really good to get that cushion at the start. I know that (Ziglo) will always come up and bring her game, so I knew I couldn’t take anything for granted,” Brown said. “I just tried to stay steady the rest of the day. I had a few hiccups in the middle, but I pulled it together with a good tee shot on 16 and carried that into 17 to finish.”

No small Fry

Shell Lake’s Brooklin Fry finished runner up in the Championship Flight Consolation finals, losing to Dana Kidd by the smallest of margins.

Both Fry and Kidd were tied after 18 holes, forcing a playoff. Fry’s birdie putt went halfway in the hole before rimming out. Kidd then stepped up to her putt and hit in softly on the edge of the cup, where her ball stopped for a second before dropping into the cup to end the match.
