Nobody better than Ratt; wrapping up the field lacrosse provincials

Aug 22, 2021 | 7:23 PM

Thomas Ratt had a rather large smile on his face on Sunday on Max Clunie Field.

Not only did his Prince Albert 18U Attack secure a bronze medal at the 2021 SLA Field Lacrosse Provincial Championships, but Ratt received the Most Valuable Player award, as voted on by the coaches in the tournament.

“It means that I got my hard work and dedication for the sport of lacrosse recognized, not only from my coaches but other coaches as well,” Ratt said as he peered down to his MVP trophy in his right hand. “It means a lot to realize that they see me as someone that can compete at the next level.”

Javan Bexson, who coaches Ratt and the Attack teams, said it’s Ratt’s tireless style of play as a D-pole defender that gets him noticed for awards like this.

“It’s an absolutely outstanding accomplishment for Thomas. He puts in a ton of work, he works extremely hard. I don’t think any player matches his work ethic out on the field. That’s the reason he’s an All-Star, he’s just an absolute workhorse out there,” Bexson said. “You can’t say enough good things about him. He wants to be successful every time he’s out there.

As a group, the Attack finished with the bronze medal. They defeated the Regina Reign 16-10. They were forced to the bronze medal game after falling to the Saskatoon Guardians 16-2 Sunday morning. The Attack finished the tournament 2-3. The Sturgis Trojans defeated the Guardians 11-7 in the gold medal game.

“It’s good. It’s not the colour that we wanted or even expected. We’re okay with it but we’re not satisfied,” Bexson said. “Hopefully we can come back in the future and colour a little better.”

Overall, Bexson said the weekend went without a hitch and said it was great to have field lacrosse back in Prince Albert.

“The weekend went fantastic. Everyone that attended was impressed by the facilities and the layout. It went the way we wanted it to,” Bexson said.

15U Attack

The 15U Attack finished their provincials with a silver medal. They got to the finals after winning two big playdown games Sunday morning, 10-7 over the Sturgis Trojans and 11-10 over the Saskatoon Generals.

That put the Attack in the finals, where they fell to the lone undefeated 15U team in the Regina Reign 13-2. Brayden Rieger scored a whopping 30 goals in the tournament. Cole Currie had 16 while Theoren Netmaker scored 13 and added five assists.

The Saskatoon Generals finished with the bronze medal, beating the Weyburn Rattlers 11-3.

The Regina Reign squeezed by the Moose Jaw Mustangs in the gold medal game, winning 8-7.
