Alleged sexual assault at Big River First Nation results in jail sentence

Aug 17, 2021 | 10:00 AM

A man accused earlier this year of sexual assault has received a jail sentence totalling 288 days.

Skylar Blaze Lachance, 23, was sentenced Friday at Whitefish after entering guilty pleas to assault and uttering threats.

The case itself dates back to Jan. 18 when the female victim called police after the incident. She received medical treatment from the injuries she sustained.

At a court hearing in March, Lachance entered not guilty pleas to all charges and a trial was scheduled for July. Crown Prosecutor Jonathon Foreman was contacted by paNOW to comment on why the sexual assault charge was withdrawn.

“Eventually defense council offered a guilty plea and the crown, after consulting with the complainant, was prepared to accept assault rather than put the witness on the stand,” he explained.

Lachance has been in custody since March 3, and so with credit for time spent in remand, was essentially granted time served.
