The Minister of Justice and Attorney General has appointed Barry Wilcox, Q.C. as the interim Chief Commissioner of the Human Rights Commission.

Wilcox has been a commissioner with the Human Rights Commission since 2011 and has served as deputy chief of the commission since 2018.

“I am honoured and excited to be appointed as interim Chief Commissioner,” Wilcox said. “I look forward to working with our team to fulfill the commission’s mandate and to promote and protect the individual dignity, fundamental freedoms, and equal rights of Saskatchewan citizens.”

Wilcox was born and raised in Prince Albert and has practiced his entire career in the city. He was admitted as a member of the Law Society of Saskatchewan in 1981.

While his current practice focuses on corporate law, personal and corporate finance and other business related legal issues, he has a broad range of legal experience in diverse areas of the law, including administrative law, criminal law, civil litigation, and appellate law. Barry is also a licensed mediator.

Wilcox also served as a member of the federal judicial appointment advisory committee for Saskatchewan for a five year term as a representative of the Federal Minister of Justice.

This committee was responsible for reviewing applicants for judicial appointment to the Saskatchewan Court of Queen’s Bench and Court of Appeal, the Federal Court of Canada and the Tax Court of Canada.

“I would like to thank Mr. Wilcox for agreeing to act as Chief Commissioner of the Human Rights Commission,” Justice and Attorney General Minister Gordon Wyant said in an emailed statement. “I am confident that the commission will be able to fully serve the people of Saskatchewan under his leadership as we search for a new permanent Chief Commissioner.”

Wilcox replaces former chief commissioner David Arnot who was recently appointed as an independent senator by the independent advisory board for senate appointments.
