MELFORT, Sask. – A national farm organization is applauding the federal government for providing $100 million for drought relief through AgriRecovery and the Alberta government’s announcement of $136 million for that provinces drought-stricken ranchers.

Canadian Federation of Agriculture (CFA) President Mary Robinson said she is pleased to see both levels of government step forward and show their support for farmers in these very trying times.

“The drought in Western Canada and Northwestern Ontario have had devastating impacts on grain producers and livestock producers in these regions and these assistance packages are encouraging signs,” Robinson said. “But clearly more funding is needed to address the situation across much of Canada.”

Robinson also called on governments in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, B.C. and Ontario to follow Alberta’s lead and develop AgriRecovery assistance packages for the affected producers in those provinces as well.

“As AgriRecovery is a joint federal-provincial cost sharing program, we expect the federal government to provide its share for all AgriRecovery assistance requests by provincial governments,” Robinson said.

Fertilizer Canada will expand the Fertilizer Use Survey to include wheat, flax, sunflowers, and corn in Western Canada.

President and CEO Karen Proud said the data from the survey provides information on the current state of fertilizer management in Canadian crop production and assesses grower awareness and adoption of 4R Nutrient Stewardship.

“The survey shows us how agri-retailers and farmers across Canada are implementing 4R, which is an approach that has been demonstrated to increase crop production while protecting our environment,” Proud said.

The survey also examines the adoption of 4R Nutrient Stewardship related to crop type, region, soil practices, and farm size.
