City-Wide Construction

Summer weather co-operates during construction season

The City of Prince Albert is seeing quite a bit of construction this summer. While there have been a few hiccups, a majority of the construction has been going well and is on schedule.

Plenty of people may be impacted by the construction on 15th St. E. This construction started at the beginning of June and will finish at the end of the summer.

“The 15th St. E., project which includes street widening to include a third lane in both directions is estimated for completion at the end of August,” Nicole Miller, the manager of city capital projects told paNOW. “We’re a few weeks behind schedule due to conflicts that were encountered with utilities. We are progressing strongly and looking at having that road open for traffic in both directions by the end of August.”

There are a few more sites in the city that are experiencing construction with no delays.

Along with the ongoings on 15th St. E. the city can also see major construction on 22nd St. E. from 7th Avenue to 10th Avenue.

“It’s currently on schedule, the concrete work has been completed, the base in progress then they will be paving it,” Miller said.

Two other projects that are going on right now are the new raw water pump house being constructed across from the water treatment plant on River St. W., and a landfill cell expansion where the city is expanding the lifespan of the site.

“The city is currently building a new raw water pump house. That project is currently on schedule,” Miller said. “The new facility is scheduled to be turned over to the city in March of 2022. All the walls and the floors have been poured and the intake water line has been installed.

“The city was reaching maximum capacity at the landfill and as such we have undertaken the project of expanding the landfill by expanding cell 1B, and cells 1A and 2A.”

Upcoming construction

Another project the city will be completing this year will be the extension of Marquis Road and 10th Ave. W.

“That will be extending Marquis Road so when you’re going south from the Alfred Jenkins Fieldhouse, you’ll be able to go all the way to Marquis Road,” Miller said. “That is estimated to start in the next couple weeks and will be completed by the end of the 2021 construction season.”

An additional project the city is expecting to experience this fall is the replacement and construction of pedestrian bridges at Little Red River Park.

“That tender closes today and will be going to city council on August 16,” Miller added.

The intent is to complete the expansion on Marquis Road by this fall and the construction of the pedestrian bridges will be completed by this winter.
