Following a final 1 p.m. tee off following a full weekend of golf, the winner of the Cooke Municipal 100th Men’s Northern Amateur Golf Tournament at the Cooke Municipal Golf Course is Greg Swenson.

Swenson started the tournament with a 69 by the end of the first day of play. He would then go on to defeat Diehl Normand in match play by the 11th hole during his first game of play on Sunday and would later defeat Shaun Dunphy by hole 12.

Monday’s 7 a.m. start would see Swenson overtake Mike Smith in the semi-finals by the 18th hole.

Trevor Ring would meet him in the final after overtaking Wyatt Newman in his semi-final match.

Monday afternoon, Swenson would be up by four over Ring by the 15th hole to take the win.

Ring played a good game, he said, and this is not the last the golf world will see of him.

“He played well all weekend and he’ll be back. He’s got a good game.”

This is Swenson’s first win at the Men’s Northern Amateur Golf Tournament following three other championship final showings.

However, this isn’t his first milestone tournament win. With Cooke Municipal turning 100 in 2009, Swenson was club champion that year. Being featured in both 100th anniversary celebration is pretty cool, he said.

“It was a pretty special weekend. Obviously the golf course went out of their way to host a fantastic event. The golf course was in immaculate condition, the staff are very accommodating, the tournament committee ran the tournament very well.”

For Swenson, Cooke Municipal is the best golf course in the country right now and everyone needs to check it out.
