Mackenzie Tour – PGA Tour Canada heading to Elk Ridge

The Mackenzie Tour- PGA Tour Canada is back in Saskatchewan.

The Tour announced on Tuesday, June 22 that the ownership group at Elk Ridge Resort in Waskesiu has entered an eight-year agreement for the Elk Ridge Open to be a stop on the Mackenzie Tour.

Mackenzie Tour executive director Scott Pritchard says they’re excited to bring the tour back to Saskatchewan for the first time since 2016.

“Fans, sponsors, and volunteers in Saskatchewan have always been extremely supportive of our tour,” Pritchard said. “And we can’t wait to see them back on the course later this summer.”

Dakota Dunes just outside Saskatoon held the last Mackenzie Tour event.

The Elk Ridge Open will run the week of September 6 for 2021 but will move to June 20-26 in 2022 as a full-fledged Mackenzie Tour event. The 2021 event will also only feature Canadian golfers due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Routes2SK, which recently purchased Elk Ridge Resort, and have worked on the course and resort to make it ready for an event like this.

“We’re really excited to showcase this resort,” said managing partner Ryan Danberg. “It’s ready to take to a new level and to take an event like this on.”

Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe was also at the Zoom press conference and said as we exit the COVID-19 pandemic, there’s lots of talk about helping the economy recover, as well as helping our communities.

“What better way to gather, but to gather around various world-class sporting events that we have access to here in Saskatchewan,” Moe said.

It was also announced that the Honorary Chair of the tournament would be current PGA Tour pro, and Mackenzie Tour alum Graham DeLaet. The Weyburn native, who also created the Graham and Ruby DeLaet Foundation in support of children’s health and Junior golf, says he’s excited that he and his charity are able to be a part of the event.

DeLaet also joked that in September, Mother Nature might have a part to play in event.

“They might get a little bit of that Saskatchewan cold weather especially in the northern part of the province,” he said. “But that will toughen them up and show them what we’re all about as prairie boys.”

The tournament will also be run with the help of VMC Sports and Entertainment, which has been the host organization for a number of other Mackenzie Tour events.
