Shell Lake’s Fry wins Ladies Northern after some confusion

Jun 6, 2021 | 7:21 PM

When Brooklin Fry came back to the Cooke Municipal Golf Course clubhouse after finished both of her rounds at the Ladies Northern, she and everyone else had no idea who had won.

There was some confusion at the scorekeeper’s table as to who actually won the tournament. At one point, it looked like Fry would have to be in a playoff with fellow junior golfer standout Ella Kozak from Yorkton.

“I had no idea who won. It was a really close battle all through the whole day. I was just crossing my fingers,” Fry said.

But when all was said and done, the 16-year-old sharpshooter from Shell Lake was declared the winner by a pair of strokes. Kozak actually found herself in a tie for second place with former Prince Albert product and now Saskatoon golfer Kim Brown—who had won the four previous Ladies Northerns.

With the Ladies Northerns being played so early in the golf season this year, it was Fry’s first tournament of the season. She said it took a few holes to find her rhythm.

“[Saturday] was a little bit rough, I had jitters out there for the first tournament of the year,” Fry said. “But today, I started off really strong and I brought my game back the last couple holes.”

Last year as a 15-year-old, Fry won both the women’s and junior women’s provincials. She also finished second in 2020 Ladies Lobstick in Waskesiu, falling in the finals to Saskatoon’s Kathy Ziglo. Fry was later invited to a Golf Canada camp at the Bear Mountain Resort in Victoria, B.C.
