MELFORT, Sask. — A recent survey finds most Canadians remain strongly committed to beef but one in four did consider cutting beef from their diets over the past year.

The survey was conducted by the Agri-Food Analytics Lab at Dahlhousie University in Halifax in partnership with Angus Reid.

Beef is included in about 92 percent of diets with about two-thirds classified as regular consumers, eating beef at least once of a week. Alberta ranks number one at 73 percent, with B.C. trailing the pack at 58 percent.

Professor of Agri-Food Analytics at Dalhousie University Sylvain Charlebois said it differs with each generation.

“The younger generations are influenced by factors like environment, health, animal welfare and the one that has creeped up in this survey is price,” Charlebois said. “Price is really up there, almost equal to health concerns.”

The survey found only three percent of Canadians are vegetarians, which is unchanged from one year ago. Another seven percent classify themselves at flexitarian, which means the person has a primarily vegetarian diet, but occasionally eats fish or meat.

The Director of hydrology at the University of Saskatchewan John Pomeroy said rain could not be coming at a better time.

He said he has spoken with many concerned farmers that are telling him they have never seen conditions this dry.

“Some creeks are bone dry and bigger rivers are recording some of the lowest flows ever recorded,” Pomeroy said.

Farmers around the province can rejoice a little bit.

Rain and even some snow is expected throughout the province over the next week.
