Major upgrades planned for Shellbrook’s Centennial Park

May 13, 2021 | 5:00 PM

The Town of Shellbrook and the Shellbrook Kinettes have teamed up for a unique project that will see Centennial Park receive a major upgrade.

In addition to the installation of a nine hole disc golf course, the committee also plans to plant 40 trees. Shellbrook town council has agreed provide the Kinettes with $5,000 for the project. Mayor Amund Otterson said it was an easy decision for council.

“I think any activity is great. Disc Golf is a rising sport,” he said.

While the course design plans are being finalized, as well as the opening date, Otterson was able to confirm the equipment has been ordered.

“The installation is relatively simple and I’m sure if needed, volunteers or town equipment will kick in,” he said.

Shellbrook Kinettes President Regan Buckingham said the idea for the disc golf course came about after a trip she and her husband took to Waskesiu and played the course that’s been built there.

“We have been planning and discussing for some time and we think this is a huge addition to our community,” she said.

In the coming weeks, Kinettes members plan to meet with Disc Golf Saskatchewan and the Town to lay out a course design. Kinettes members Tasha Cyr shared she’s looking forward to what they can accomplish for local families.

“It is just so great that it is something that you don’t have to sign up for, you don’t have to register, you don’t have to pay,” she said, adding it is a game for all ages.

Sponsorships

As a means to help with fundraising, the Kinettes group is selling sponsorships for both the course and the trees.

Businesses can sponsor a bucket for $750. It’s a one time fee and will include advertising on the hole signage. There are only nine opportunities for this sponsorship, as it is a permanent sponsorship for the purchased hole. Anyone interested can contact Shellbrook Kinettes. Hole sponsorships will be on a first come first served basis.

“We are also going to be including the opportunity to plant a tree (or a bundle of trees) in memory of a loved one. This idea was brought to us by a community member who thought it would be a wonderful display for those we love,” Buckingham said.

Trees can be planted as one tree ($250), or in a bundle of all trees on a hole. More information on tree bundles will be announced once the course has been designed.
