Fire consumes vacant house in East Hill neighbourhood

May 11, 2021 | 12:00 PM

A thick line of yellow tape surrounds a house in Prince Albert’s east hill area.

A fire early Tuesday morning resulted in extensive damage to the structure. The neighbour who called 911 told paNOW he was awoken by the sound of someone pounding on his door, calling for help.

“There must have been some carpet in there or something because it went up fast,” he recalled.

According to a post on the Prince Albert Fire Dept. Facebook page, crews arrived on scene to see visible smoke and flames coming from the windows of the single family dwelling.

There were no injuries reported. The neighbour, who evacuated his own family to a safe location across the street, said there was no one living at the house but added there were people constantly “coming and going.”

Deputy Fire Chief Alex Paul confirmed there was no one inside the house at the time of the fire.

“It appears that the fire started in the interior of the house,” he said.

The fire Tuesday morning marks the second of its kind in less than five days.

A house, located in the 500 block of 12th St. E, was consumed by fire last Thursday morning. The cause also remains under investigation but the owners suspect it was deliberately set. Paul could not confirm if the fire was suspicious, adding the file is now with police.

A GoFundMe to assist the family has so far raised nearly $3,000.
